Managed Services Sharing Session
On September 12,
join us for a special night at WiNSUG. It's the Managed Services Sharing
Session. We're going to have a variety of our own members present for 15
minutes on a topic of their choice, on a tool or combination of tools
that they are using to automate their service. Most of the tools are
either free, or available at a nominal cost. All of them enhance our
ability to serve our users by notifying us when there is a problem,
tracking service calls, monitoring status, reporting abnormalities, and
automating processes. We'll be talking about real-life
implementations, so you'll hear about the good along with the bad.
Join us for the potpourri of services
presented. You may discover something that you want to add to your bag
of tricks. After each set of presentations, we'll do a quick Q&A to
answer any questions you have about the solutions presented.
Some of the possible products and services
that we may see are:
Professional Services Automation (PSA) which
might be AutoTask, ConnectWise, TigerPaw.
Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) - Hound
Dog (now GFI Max), Kaseya, IT Control Suite, Zenith Infotech
Remote desktop support software - LogMeIn,
TeamViewer, GoToAssist Express, VNC-type solutions, Remote Web Workplace
Backup software - StorageCraft, Acronis.
Storage solutions - JungleDisk, Intronis,
eFolder, Symform
Antivirus/security automation - Trend,
SonicWall
If there is something you are using and would
like to present on it to a very friendly crowd, let me know and I'll
schedule you in! Just because it is not listed above as a product
does not mean we wouldn't welcome the presentation, so give me a shout,
either personally or on the mailing list.

Windows Phone 7 by David Heil and Jim Wilson, both are
Microsoft MVPs

Mobile phones are a key part of the IT scene and life in general these
days. We are delighted to have two top notch presenters this
month. The presentation will be geared at application developers
getting started with developing on Windows Phone 7. If you're into
IT, you won't want to miss this.
David Heil
is a Windows Mobile system architect and team mentor for the
wireless connectivity division at Qualcomm.
David has been designing board support packages and device drivers
for Windows CE for over ten years. He specializes in low-power,
handheld, wireless devices in the consumer and medical markets. He
is a regular speaker at Embedded System Conferences and the Mobile
and Embedded Developer Conferences and judge of the Embedded
Development Invitational (Imagine Cup). David holds a bachelors
degree in electrical engineering from the Milwaukee School of
Engineering and is a long time member of the IEEE. David is a
Microsoft Windows Embedded MVP and regularly speaks on Windows
Mobile and Windows CE topics. He can be reached at
dheil@ieee.org.
| James Y. Wilson
I am dedicated to supporting the academic community in
their use of CE and am a frequent contributor to the Imagine
Cup, Embedded Development Competition (formerly the Windows
Embedded Student ChallengE). There is nothing more inspiring
than working with a student at the cusp of their engineering
career as they discover the capabilities of CE to make their
vision of the next cool gadget a reality.
I am also quite interested in the application of CE to the
implementation of mobile robotic platforms. To this end, I
occasionally post articles with a robotic orientation to
LearningCE.com, including the ongoing development of a CE
based robot called Socrates I and various sensory
augmentation devices.
With respect to my "Day Job," I specialize in the
development of embedded software for handheld and consumer
electronic appliances. In the course of my
career, I have designed the system software for various
devices ranging from digital surveillance cameras to pen
based computers, including the worlds first wireless thin
client device called CruisePAD (based on Windows CE 2.01).
I have developed CE and NT device drivers for USB,
Bluetooth, Wireless LAN, ATAPI, and Flash ROM technologies
(among others). I have also accumulated 19 software patents
for various algorithms used in data communications and
mobile device technology.

Vail/Home Server by Kevin Royalty
The next major Windows Home Server revision (codename: "Vail") has been
promised to be a major overhaul. The next installment of WHS will be
based on the latest Windows Server version, Windows Server 2008 R2,
which comes with a host of platform improvements that will directly
benefit home server users. Like R2, Vail will be made available only in
64-bit form. And it will build on some of the more interesting
home-based technologies that Microsoft has since introduced in Windows
7, providing what appears to be a very compelling solution for a market
pretty much ignored by Windows Home Server thus far.
After years of silence, Microsoft finally provided its first public
preview of Windows Home Server "Vail." This might suggest they are
preparing to ship the final version in time for the 2010 Holiday season
(it was originally scheduled for a 2010 CES introduction, which never
happened) via PC and device makers. Microsoft isn't commenting on the
schedule yet, but there's plenty going on in this first public build.
At our November meeting, Microsoft MVP Kevin Royalty will enlighten us
on what we can look forward to, if not when. Since Kevin is based out
of Dayton, Ohio, his presentation to WiNSUG will be delivered via
teleconference.
You are invited to post your questions and comments to
winsug@yahoogroups.com
SUBJECT: WHS VAIL in advance of the presentation, so Kevin has an
opportunity to include information of particular interest to our
members.
We are hoping to see you on November 1!
Since
1986, Kevin has been satisfying the needs of clients as an IT professional. As a
highly successful author and consultant, with both a programming and network
engineering background, he is a frequent public speaker at industry conferences
and public computer shows.
Kevin serves as President of the Cincinnati Network
Professional Association, President of the Cincinnati Small Business Server
Users Group, and sits on the board of the Information Technology Advisory Team
for the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and CincyTechUSA. Kevin is married
with a 20 year old daughter.

Kevin has been recognized by Microsoft as a leading expert on their Small
Business Server product line. The “Most Valuable Professional” (MVP)
designation is a rare honor that is bestowed on a small number of people
each year. It recognizes product expertise, community leadership, and
willingness to help others. Kevin is a nationally known Small Business
Server expert, author, and regular speaker at industry conferences.
Kevin is a Computer Science graduate, Microsoft Certified
Systems Engineer, and is certified by Microsoft for support of their Small
Business Server products.

Additional Info from Erik on 9/1/09:
Okay
everyone, here is how it’s going to go.
-
There will be very little PowerPoint. I
am not as good as Rick Joyce at putting together awesome PP. I will be
covering everything step by step though. Sorry, Marty, that means you will
be left out. I learned most everything from the website.
-
We
will not be building the complete tool Thursday night, only covering how to
build the tool. There is a lot of downloading of updates and compiling to be
done and you would just be looking at boring screens.
-
I
will be providing a complete DVD for people to copy and the raw ISO file to
copy to laptops. Don’t worry about bringing thumb drives to build, but you
can bring them to transfer files. The current ISO sits at 841 megs. You can
copy the ISO to your laptop and burn and test onsite.
-
I
will TRY and burn some copies to give away.
The
important thing to remember is this quote, “Give a man a fish and you feed him
for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is so true
with this tool. I want everyone to be able to make this tool and update it with
confidence by the end of the meeting.
When
things cool down, I can host a Nerd Night at my house and we can cover this in
more depth and help people build one onsite.
If you
are still on the fence about whether you should attend to learn this tool, just
ask Karen Christian or Jeff Adzima how useful this is. They both used a disk I
gave them to work their way out of a sticky situation.

2008 -
Tips & Tricks Learned Along the Way by Rick Joyce

By
the time this meeting convenes, Small Business Server 2008 will have been
officially on the street for almost 10 months. Rick will outline the process for
migrating to SBS 2008 from SBS 2003, clarifying some steps and pointing out
pitfalls. For example, did you know that if you elect to install Microsoft
Forefront for Exchange during the SBS 2008 installation, it will be enabled when
you move your mailboxes and may strip off many of your saved attachments and
dump them in the quarantine folder? Rick will also discuss operational problems
that have emerged since the product shipped and how to fix them. You can enhance
the benefits you will derive from this presentation if you download and peruse
the SBS 2008 Installation Guide (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=123543)
and the recently
updated SBS2003 to SBS 2008 Migration Guide
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=123547).
Better yet, install SBS 2008
yourself and get some hands on experience, or perform a test migration. If you
have a particular topic you would like Rick to discuss, or if you have any SBS
2008 experiences which will help others to avoid problems, please contact Rick
(rjoyce@jnetservices.com)
and provide details to incorporate into the presentation.

Cisco 101 – Configuring Cisco Routers for SBS Administrators by Eric Louie
Are you
supporting Cisco devices for your customers or your company, and feel like you
don’t have a clue as to how to configure or monitor those devices? Are you
depending on the GUI for what would seem to be simple tasks, and frustrated when
the GUI doesn’t do what you want? Here’s your introduction to the very
powerful command line interface (CLI) for those devices. We’ll show you
how to access the command line interface, both directly from the console port
and via telnet, show some basic status and configuration commands, and even let
you have some hands-on with these devices. The basic router commands and
switch commands will be demo’ed, and there will be a few devices for you to mess
around with. As a bonus, we’ll have a set of links that you can use in a
pinch, and a short summary in a PDF document that you can carry around, along
with some typical results and where the problems might be when you’re
troubleshooting.

The Benefits of IT Managed Services - Making Your Business Soar
in 2009 by Don Begg
The Managed Services buzz - how can it
help my business or IT environment?
There is a lot of talk around the IT
community about the Managed Services model of support. At this month's
meeting, you will hear about successful strategies for putting together a
Managed Services offering.
Our main speaker, Don Begg, has built a Managed Services solution
as a turnkey offering. He also has many years of experience in
supporting environments just like the ones our clients or employers
have. If you've been curious about why and how to implement Managed
Services, this is the session to attend.

Presenter: Don Begg has been extremely active and a strong supporter of the user
group community, as the President of the San Diego Cisco Users Group in the 90's
and most recently the International Association of Microsoft Certified
Professionals. Don Begg is chief executive officer and principal sales
consultant for
Do IT Smarter, a
leader in transitioning VARs to MSPs, headquartered in San Diego, Calif.. Begg
is one of the original founders of Do IT Smarter. As CEO he oversees the
direction of Do IT Smarter and manages their sales and marketing processes. As
principal sales consultant, Begg helps companies implement technology to solve
business problems. He has over 20 years experience in information technology
product, service and support sales. Begg began his career in 1984 as MIS
coordinator for Wang Laboratories.
While coordinator he successfully maintained the financial
production environment and was responsible for booking $25 million annually.
Begg also designed and implemented an in-house wide area network. Within a year
Begg was promoted to systems consultant where he developed technical proposals,
designed and delivered training modules for custom application software, and
marketed company products at computer shows. As systems consultant Begg received
the Analyst of the Quarter award from Wang Laboratories. In 1987 Begg became
sales representative for Wang. As sales representative he sold, designed, and
installed the first PC LAN for the company and was the first sales
representative to exceed $1 million product bookings in his assigned territory.
He also designed and presented customized on-site demonstrations.
In 1990 Begg became account representative for Wang Laboratories where he
developed and implemented creative sales strategies that increased consulting
services by 500 percent during his last two years and was awarded the Achievers
club for his work.
In 1994 Begg joined LANSystems as a sales consultant where he gained exposure to
commercial sales. While at LANSystems Begg was introduced to their service
methodology that would have a major impact on his future approach to service
projects.
In 1995 he moved to Online Connecting Point where he was senior account
executive for four years in charge of generating new network integration sales
and was instrumental in developing the service capabilities of the San Diego
office. The service department grew from a single engineer to nearly 20
engineers with Begg's new focus on service sales. Begg landed one of the largest
projects in the history of Online Connecting Point when they were awarded a $4.3
million dollar project to migrate Scripps Health from an assortment of legacy
operating systems to a state of the art Microsoft BackOffice system. The project
involved the migration of 3000 desktops, 50 servers, and a couple hundred
different healthcare specific applications.
Begg received his bachelor's degree in Mathematics with emphasis in computer
science from San Diego State University in 1983. He lives in San Diego with his
wife and daughter.

Microsoft Virtualization.
What is PC Virtualization and how you can use it in your own consulting practice
TODAY? by Gregg
Blundell
Case Study: TekSystems - More Jobs for You?
We will take a look at
Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007 product. What it is. How to get it.
What you can do with it. We’ll look at how to load and configure Virtual PC’s
and then explore some ways you can make use of these technologies TODAY.
*** Don’t have a dedicated
server in your office? It’s likely you have a PC under your desk with some
horsepower. We’ll demonstrate just what horsepower is or isn’t needed.
*** Use only a fraction of
what’s in your ActionPack each month? How would you like to try
applications and OS’s BEFORE having to use your client as a test bed?
*** Tired of messing with
multiple cables, keyboards, mice, network configurations, KVM switches and the
like? You may just like this friendly and flexible alternative.
This short session will get your
virtual feet wet and introduce you to some of the basic concepts behind
virtualization. We will plan a follow-up session sometime in the future
to move to Virtual Server technologies and meet-up with Rick’s fine case-study
from a few months back (thanks Rick!)
This session is mainly intended as an introduction for those who have
not used Microsoft’s VirtualPC product. For those who have, who knows,
maybe we’ll discover something new Wednesday night?

Fred presented at SMBTN San Diego a few months ago and everyone agreed how
interesting and beneficial the presentation was. His company offers
comprehensive custom commercial insurance packages.
He discusses in applicable detail the laws covering liability, workman's comp,
independent contractor definitions per California Law. At the SMBTN
meeting most of the consultants learned how many of their concepts in these
areas were wrong. And just how much issues in these areas could affect

Topic: Malware Detection and Prevention by John Bisaillon (Systems
Computer Training)
Case Study: Steel Bolt Hacking, Physical Security Attacks and
Counters for the Small Business Computer Consultant by Erik Pfeiffer (Silver
Ace Consulting)
Malicious software or malware, can be used in many different ways, from
transferring files to sending out spam to keylogging to sniffing network
traffic. Since there is a multitude of ways that malware can be distributed
(free download sites, physical media, web browser vulnerabilities, etc.) it is
not uncommon for your computer to be exposed to this threat. This presentation
will explain how to manually detect and remove malware using free tools. Actual
demonstrations will be performed with the software using virtual machines. The
presentation will conclude by discussing recommended strategies for Malware
prevention.
John Bisaillon is a Technical Instructor for Systems Computer Training, Inc.,
of Carlsbad, CA. John is Systems’ chief security instructor and has developed a
comprehensive series of hands-on security courses.
Before coming to Systems, he performed a mixture of systems administration
and consulting work. John had traveled the country teaching Microsoft and
security courses for two different nationwide training companies. He edited the
computer networking book "TCP/IP on Windows NT Illustrated" (McGraw-Hill)./ /He
also co-developed several Windows 2003/ 2000 courses for a local university,
where he achieved the awarded */"Instructor of the Quarter"./* John has achieved
the certifications: CISSP, SCNP, MCSE (2003/2000/NT), CCNA, CEH, Security +,
Network +, A+, MCT. He also obtained Masters and Bachelors degrees in

October 5, 2006 - Topic: Nagios by Tony Su (also
available via Office Live Meeting)
Case Study: SMB Nation 2006 Recap by Rick Joyce
Recommend downloading the README for the GroundworkOpensource/Nagios
VMware VM from my website
That one document is practically a complete HOW-TO I wrote up
for any Windows Admin who is interested in deploying Nagios to
monitor Windows boxes...
What is Nagios?
It's a Network Monitoring system. It is extremely versatile,
people have used it to monitor *NIX, Mac, routers, switches,
building environmentals... and yes, Windows.
Is this new, unproven technology?
It's been around for about 7 years now.
How much does it cost?
Nada. Zilch.
So, why haven't I heard of it before?
If
you're a Windows SysAdmin, Nagios hasn't been for you. Even
today, it can be installed only on Linux. Most Windows SysAdmins
don't feel comfortable learning and installing something they
may still not understand well.
So, why Nagios now... and especially for SBS?
My
invention is to create a Software Appliance which is almost as
easy to deploy as a hardware appliance like a Sonicwall (which
BTW runs Linux). Although others have written similar Software
Appliances with other features like a fully automated install
and web management, I felt that the most flexible and versatile
deployment still requires access through the OS, so I built on
SuSE 10.0. Not to worry, the "GWK INFO.txt" file linked above
should be <everything> you need to fine tune your deployment
once. After that, Nagios is accessible through one of the best
web interfaces written, GroundworkOpensource.
How do I get setup?
All
distributions are through the TORRENT network. Although still
relatively unused by Windows SysAdmins, the TORRENT network is
widely used by Open Source to freely distribute legitimate
software efficiently. Many Anti-Virus recognize the common use
of peer to peer network file sharing and will automatically scan
any downloads.
The Downloads
Download and install some version of VMware. I recommend
Workstation, Server or ESX, but Player and GSX will work, too.
Download the VM "software hard drive" using one of the following
torrent files
The
Faster Download
Multiple seeders means faster downloads, but does not include
the VMX configuration file necessary to run in Player.
You
should also download the following
The
Newer Download (a complete package)
Includes the VMX configuration file and the NSclient app.
The WINSUG Meeting
So
now the meeting announcement... and I left it to the end. That's
because for any of you who aren't able to attend in person or by
LiveMeeting, I'll make the Presentation Slides available to all
after any modifications if there are pertinent Q&A that come up
during the meeting.
The
first half hour or so will be an ordinary slide presentation to
introduce the idea of a Software Appliance and deploying Virtual
Machines.
The
remainder of the meeting will be a rather ambitious Installfest
for anyone who wishes to participate, but to participate you
will need to prepare....
Attending in person:
Laptop with 3GB of free space after installing a VMware
application.
I
encourage downloading the files listed above, but a few DVDs
will be available to share and transfer files.
There <may> be a WiFi connection, but transferring hundreds of
megabytes if not gigabytes wirelessly all at once can be slow.
Attending via LiveMeeting:
Either have a Windows machine with 3GB of free space or be able
to remote into your machine with similar free space.
Install VMware beforehand
Download the files listed above.
Additional preparation recommendation:
Read the GWK NFO to familiarize yourself with what you may need
to do.
Create a small VMware VM beforehand.
See
you at WINSUG!

Topic: Everything You Should Know About Licensing by Jocelin
Arakawa
Case Study: Anonymity on the Internet by Erik Pfeiffer
This was
presented at Coleman College with Jocelin joining us via Office Live Meeting.
She focused on the Open License programs, the differences and the offerings for
each flavor. She also added a short delivery on CAL licensing, a topic
that frequently comes up as an unclear point.
Jocelin
Arakawa, Licensing Specialist - SMS&P West Region, SoCal has the primary role to
assist with a licensing program solution that would meet the customer's needs.
She is conversant on the program and product licensing however she adds the
caveat that in some configurations, Microsoft's technology provides some
licensing challenges even for Licensing Specialists.
BIO:
Jocelin has been with Microsoft for nearly 10 years in a variety of roles,
primarily in the Sales organization. She has been in her current role of
Licensing Specialist for two years. As a Licensing Specialist she comes
into contact with a multitude of individuals, customers and Partners of all
kinds. Her area of expertise lies in the Microsoft licensing programs
and aligning the customer with the most appropriate program. Her
tenure at Microsoft has allowed her to experience the changes in both products
and programs, a most interesting journey.
She
currently lives in a very small town in Western Washington amidst cows and
horses, quite a change from the sunny shores of her birthplace in Hawaii.
Raised and married in Hawaii, then moving to the "mainland" to experience the

Businesses
Rob Ayer, Director Network Operations for
RedWire, will be discussing the realities of VoIP -- the good, the bad, and the
ugly. VoIP is one of the hottest technologies around right now, but it's also
one of the most misunderstood. In mid-2004 RedWire implemented its own VoIP
network. Rob was involved from the beginning and will share his experiences
setting up the network and dealing with customers. You'll find out what kinds of
businesses and clients are good candidates for VoIP (and which aren't), learn
about some of the gotchas of VoIP, and some of the realistic benefits. There
will be a live VoIP feature demonstration and some VoIP demos to take home and
experiment with.

WiNSUG Anniversary Party plus... Small Business Spotlight (or 'So You
Want to be a Consultant?')
We celebrated our official one year anniversary with food and friends.
It was a bit of a potluck event with the dish from Rubio's Fresh Mexican
Grill. We even had a specially made cake during our break!
We had a short presentation on Pre-Paid Legal Services (www.prepaidlegal.com)
by Elaine White, a San Diego based attorney followed by the keynote
presentation which included a panel presentation/discussion on
consulting businesses that are up and running. We all had an
opportunity to learn from others in the field working to manage their
business and continuing to grow in this competitive environment.
The panel included an independent consultant: John Rubino (www.rubinonet.net),
a general partner: Michael Brunson (www.nctg.com),
and Jeff Adzima: a corporation (www.lasrlink.com).
Our own Paula Mellon (aka Barbra Walters) moderated and kept
everyone focused on the topic.
The
informal after meeting discussions in lots of small groups continued for
quite sometime and it was great to see everyone having a good time and
looking forward to our next year.

Mobility in SBS 2003 - Exchange ActiveSync
Find out how to utilize Exchange 2003 features to get email on mobile

well as what works and what doesn't. Here was an opportunity to
learn from a pro who has direct experience.

BIO:
Ofer Shimrat has been developing database applications for a variety of
industries including hospitality, event production, medical research,
construction and engineering since 1991. During deployment of these
applications in networked environments it quickly became clear to Ofer
that not all networks are designed and built the same - that is, some
network administrators are better than others. As a result, in early
2000, Ofer plunged into the networking world, and utilizing rigorous
database modeling approaches, learned to take advantage of the many
features currently available with network technologies. When properly
designed and implemented, current hardware and software technologies
afford the very fastest throughput and performance that is critical for
reliable and scalable database deployment and operations across the
network. Now in 2005, with a solid background of both database and
networking, Ofer is uniquely positioned to tackle productivity
challenges for his clientele with a more robust overview to make it all
happen. For contact information go to

Microsoft
This was the third of a special three meeting series on backup & restore
technologies and methodologies. Our presenter, Paul Fitzgerald is
the Microsoft SBS Backup Program Manager. This meeting was
presented via Microsoft Office Live Meeting. If you work with
Small Business Server this is a meeting you shouldn't have missed.
Here's the PPT if you want to check it out.
BIO: "I was on the original team that was created back in 1995
to understand if a server product could be built that would be
viable for small businesses. It was a pet project of Steve
Ballmer's. It was clear that he saw the potential for the company
plus a real need for small businesses. After joining the team I
quickly learned that he was right.
My initial focus was testing. I owned all testing of SBS 4.0 and had
a team of 5 people. As the product and team grew I focused on
platform integration (getting the server applications to run when
installed on the same server). I also owned all network related
testing.
I am the oldest member of the SBS team and the only one left from
the original team. I was answering newsgroup posts back in 1996 and
met a lot of great people on the way.. a few of them are SBS MVPs
today.
During the SBS 2003 cycle I was asked to move to Program Management
to work on some of the client setup issues. I now own backup/restore
and migration. I am a huge fan of our partners and the new
community work we are doing.
We need the partners to help us define the next generation of SBS
products."
We also had a presentation by Tony Su on Password Security.
He covered topics such as brute force cracking possibilities, cracking
dictionaries, security of the passphrase and the effectiveness of
password policy. Tony is very active in the networking community
and is Architect of the Revolutionary Enterprise PDA and Mobile Phone
Foundation, extending Line of Business to the Mobile Workforce!
His site is located at
http://www.su-networking.com/. You can go there, create an
account, login and download the PPT files under Whitepapers (link at top
of page) titled "A Practical Approach to Password Construction".

opportunity to get fully immersed in the tremendously critical business
support requirement for data and system recovery. Awesome Q&A.
There were two representatives from Yosemite Technologies (a leader and
specialist in the world of backups) in attendance. Presentation
emphasis was on the following:
Backup consideration: tape vs. disk vs. d2d2t
Network scenarios, various servers topologies, multi site etc.
Backup best practices
Restore best practices
Disaster recovery vs. backup
Backing up special files: SQL / Exchange / other databases / open

Swing It!
You may have heard about it, now you can learn about it! Karen
Christian and Michael Brunson will presented the overview and detailed
process review of the Swing Migration as developed by Jeff Middleton (www.sbsmigration.com)
on Thursday, November 4. With two production client 'swings' under
their belt (so far) and another scheduled in mid-November 2004, this
will be an opportunity to learn all about the techniques that are
employed. The actual 'production swing' experiences so far has
been from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 using the original server hardware.
The next swing will be to new server hardware. Rick Joyce will be
available to add his take from his observations of the process also.
If you're considering upgrades on servers for small businesses somewhere
in the future, finding out what this is, how it works and the pros and
cons of other methods is definitely worthwhile. The process can be
applied to Windows NT, SBS 4.x, SBS 2000, SBS 2003, Windows Server 2000,
Windows Server 2003, and various versions of Exchange.

FBI Presentation
We had a great meeting on Thursday, October 7 which included a
presentation by two Special Agents from the San Diego FBI office.
Lori Jensen and Chris Nelson are with the Computer Crime Squad and we
look forward to an interesting and informative evening. The topics
will cover the general workings of the FBI, a special program called
'InfraGard' (guarding the infrastructure,
http://www.infragard.net/) and an explanation and discussion about
the various types of computer crimes in the area. This will be
supportive of the work we do to help our businesses remain safe and
secure. As business owners look to us (their IT support staff -
in-house or outsourced) for all things computer related, we need to be
prepared for the possibility that we will need a solid understanding of
the current landscape and legal process.
The meeting was very interesting, entertaining (Chris sure loves those
aerial shots) and made everyone think (where do they keep their guns?).
We all learned something :)
September 2, 2004
SharePoint
Todd Rowe was the presenter at the September 2 meeting. He covered
SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services. His
presentation was well received and there was clearly more material that
could have been covered beyond the 2 1/2 hours that evening. I'm
sure everyone there will agree that we want to invite him back in the
future for more on one of the several products in which he specializes
(and there are many as we found out). As a bonus, there were 3
copies of Windows 2003 Server (NFR) given away too. Whether you
were brand new to SharePoint or had some tougher technical questions
regarding the products, Todd sent everyone home with knowledge and
exposure to these awesome products that make us all want to jump in,
implement and sing the virtues of the amazing features and how they will
support our businesses and our clientele.
