Microsoft Virtualization.
What is PC Virtualization and how you can use it in your own consulting practice
TODAY? by Gregg Blundell
Case Study: TekSystems - More Jobs for You?
We will take a look at
Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007 product. What it is. How to get it.
What you can do with it. We’ll look at how to load and configure Virtual PC’s
and then explore some ways you can make use of these technologies TODAY.
*** Don’t have a dedicated
server in your office? It’s likely you have a PC under your desk with some
horsepower. We’ll demonstrate just what horsepower is or isn’t needed.
*** Use only a fraction of
what’s in your ActionPack each month? How would you like to try
applications and OS’s BEFORE having to use your client as a test bed?
*** Tired of messing with
multiple cables, keyboards, mice, network configurations, KVM switches and the
like? You may just like this friendly and flexible alternative.
This short session will get your
virtual feet wet and introduce you to some of the basic concepts behind
virtualization. We will plan a follow-up session sometime in the future
to move to Virtual Server technologies and meet-up with Rick’s fine case-study
from a few months back (thanks Rick!)
This session is mainly intended as an introduction for those who have not used
Microsoft’s VirtualPC product. For those who have, who knows, maybe we’ll
discover something new Wednesday night?

Kris
Alandy and Rick Van Ackeren from TEKsystems www.teksystems.com will share how their staffing and recruiting services

Topic: Business Insurance - Are You Covered? by Fred Liebel
Fred Liebel, an Insurance professional is our guest and keynote speaker this
evening. His information for any small business or self employed Consultant is
invaluable and really, a must.

Fred presented at SMBTN San Diego a few months ago and everyone agreed how
interesting and beneficial the presentation was. His company offers
comprehensive custom commercial insurance packages.
He discusses in applicable detail the laws covering liability, workman's comp,
independent contractor definitions per California Law. At the SMBTN meeting
most of the consultants learned how many of their concepts in these areas were
wrong. And just how much issues in these areas could affect their own financial
assets and well being.

Topic: Malware Detection and Prevention by John Bisaillon (Systems
Computer Training)
Case Study: Steel Bolt Hacking, Physical Security Attacks and
Counters for the Small Business Computer Consultant by Erik Pfeiffer (Silver
Ace Consulting)
Malicious software or malware, can be used in many different ways, from
transferring files to sending out spam to keylogging to sniffing network
traffic. Since there is a multitude of ways that malware can be distributed
(free download sites, physical media, web browser vulnerabilities, etc.) it is
not uncommon for your computer to be exposed to this threat. This presentation
will explain how to manually detect and remove malware using free tools. Actual
demonstrations will be performed with the software using virtual machines. The
presentation will conclude by discussing recommended strategies for Malware
prevention.
John Bisaillon is a Technical Instructor for Systems Computer Training, Inc.,
of Carlsbad, CA. John is Systems’ chief security instructor and has developed a
comprehensive series of hands-on security courses.
Before coming to Systems, he performed a mixture of systems administration
and consulting work. John had traveled the country teaching Microsoft and
security courses for two different nationwide training companies. He edited the
computer networking book "TCP/IP on Windows NT Illustrated" (McGraw-Hill)./ /He
also co-developed several Windows 2003/ 2000 courses for a local university,
where he achieved the awarded */"Instructor of the Quarter"./* John has achieved
the certifications: CISSP, SCNP, MCSE (2003/2000/NT), CCNA, CEH, Security +,
Network +, A+, MCT. He also obtained Masters and Bachelors degrees in

October 5, 2006 - Topic: Nagios by Tony Su (also available via Office Live Meeting)
Case Study: SMB Nation 2006 Recap by Rick Joyce
Recommend downloading the README for the GroundworkOpensource/Nagios
VMware VM from my website
That one document is practically a complete HOW-TO I wrote up
for any Windows Admin who is interested in deploying Nagios to
monitor Windows boxes...
What is Nagios?
It's a Network Monitoring system. It is extremely versatile,
people have used it to monitor *NIX, Mac, routers, switches,
building environmentals... and yes, Windows.
Is this new, unproven technology?
It's been around for about 7 years now.
How much does it cost?
Nada. Zilch.
So, why haven't I heard of it before?
If
you're a Windows SysAdmin, Nagios hasn't been for you. Even
today, it can be installed only on Linux. Most Windows SysAdmins
don't feel comfortable learning and installing something they
may still not understand well.
So, why Nagios now... and especially for SBS?
My
invention is to create a Software Appliance which is almost as
easy to deploy as a hardware appliance like a Sonicwall (which
BTW runs Linux). Although others have written similar Software
Appliances with other features like a fully automated install
and web management, I felt that the most flexible and versatile
deployment still requires access through the OS, so I built on
SuSE 10.0. Not to worry, the "GWK INFO.txt" file linked above
should be <everything> you need to fine tune your deployment
once. After that, Nagios is accessible through one of the best
web interfaces written, GroundworkOpensource.
How do I get setup?
All
distributions are through the TORRENT network. Although still
relatively unused by Windows SysAdmins, the TORRENT network is
widely used by Open Source to freely distribute legitimate
software efficiently. Many Anti-Virus recognize the common use
of peer to peer network file sharing and will automatically scan
any downloads.
The Downloads
Download and install some version of VMware. I recommend
Workstation, Server or ESX, but Player and GSX will work, too.
Download the VM "software hard drive" using one of the following
torrent files
The
Faster Download
Multiple seeders means faster downloads, but does not include
the VMX configuration file necessary to run in Player.
You
should also download the following
The
Newer Download (a complete package)
Includes the VMX configuration file and the NSclient app.
The WINSUG Meeting
So
now the meeting announcement... and I left it to the end.
That's because for any of you who aren't able to attend in
person or by LiveMeeting, I'll make the Presentation Slides
available to all after any modifications if there are pertinent
Q&A that come up during the meeting.
The
first half hour or so will be an ordinary slide presentation to
introduce the idea of a Software Appliance and deploying Virtual
Machines.
The
remainder of the meeting will be a rather ambitious Installfest
for anyone who wishes to participate, but to participate you
will need to prepare....
Attending in person:
Laptop with 3GB of free space after installing a VMware
application.
I
encourage downloading the files listed above, but a few DVDs
will be available to share and transfer files.
There <may> be a WiFi connection, but transferring hundreds of
megabytes if not gigabytes wirelessly all at once can be slow.
Attending via LiveMeeting:
Either have a Windows machine with 3GB of free space or be able
to remote into your machine with similar free space.
Install VMware beforehand
Download the files listed above.
Additional preparation recommendation:
Read the GWK NFO to familiarize yourself with what you may need
to do.
Create a small VMware VM beforehand.
See
you at WINSUG!

Topic: Everything You Should Know About Licensing by Jocelin
Arakawa
Case Study: Anonymity on the Internet by Erik Pfeiffer
This was
presented at Coleman College with Jocelin joining us via Office Live Meeting.
She focused on the Open License programs, the differences and the offerings for
each flavor. She also added a short delivery on CAL licensing, a topic that
frequently comes up as an unclear point.
Jocelin
Arakawa, Licensing Specialist - SMS&P West Region, SoCal has the primary role to
assist with a licensing program solution that would meet the customer's needs.
She is conversant on the program and product licensing however she adds the
caveat that in some configurations, Microsoft's technology provides some
licensing challenges even for Licensing Specialists.
BIO:
Jocelin has been with Microsoft for nearly 10 years in a variety of roles,
primarily in the Sales organization. She has been in her current role of
Licensing Specialist for two years. As a Licensing Specialist she comes into
contact with a multitude of individuals, customers and Partners of all kinds.
Her area of expertise lies in the Microsoft licensing programs and aligning
the customer with the most appropriate program. Her tenure at Microsoft has
allowed her to experience the changes in both products and programs, a most
interesting journey.
She
currently lives in a very small town in Western Washington amidst cows and
horses, quite a change from the sunny shores of her birthplace in Hawaii.
Raised and married in Hawaii, then moving to the "mainland" to experience the

In October 2001, James founded
invisiblenet.net, a distributed cryptographic framework for the
internet for anonymity and privacy.
In 2003, James founded "Secure
